What is eGFR?
It is the estimated glomerular filtration rate, a measure of how much blood the kidneys filter per minute. It is calculated from serum creatinine, age, weight and sex.
What values are normal?
An eGFR above 90 mL/min is considered normal. Between 60 and 89 is mildly reduced; below 60 may indicate chronic kidney disease and requires medical follow-up.
The Cockcroft-Gault Formula
eGFR = ((140 - age) x weight x sex factor) ÷ (72 x creatinine). The sex factor is 1 for men and 0.85 for women. For example: a 60-year-old man, 70 kg and creatinine of 1.1: (80 x 70) ÷ (72 x 1.1) ≈ 70 mL/min. Remember: only a doctor interprets these values.
